Grainy digital and optical zoom on Canon Powershot SD870 IS?

We decent got a Canon Powershot SD870 IS. When we use either the digital or visual zoom, the image on the LCD screen on the back of the camera becomes bloody grainy, and it gets worse when we advance the zoom. However, when we actually lower the picture, there is no problem with the imagine.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is this typical, and is there anyway to fix this?
Qualify resolution on the backs of point and shoot cameras are reasonably poor, which is why the image on the screen goes bad. The barely way to get around this is to hook the camera up to a survey, which is bigger and has better resolution.
I would steer clear of using digital zoom ( you can turn it off in the menu way) if you don't need it. Digital zoom longing definitely reduce the quality of your images.
