Difference megapixels make in camera quality? (6.1 vs. 7 vs. 10.2..etc.)?

I am looking to buy either a Nikon D40 (6.1mp), A Nikon D40X (10.2mp) or a Canon EOS Digital Heretic xTi [EOS 400D] (10.1mp) to replace my Olympus Stylus 760 (7.1mp)
All of the greater than also come with an 18-55mm lens (I'm new to digital SLRs, i'm not certain if the mm's are talking about the lens or zoom..)
Equally, on the lens of my Olympus, it says zoom 6.5-19.5mm
I be familiar with that it isn't the camera- its the lens that makes the dead ringer, but:
Does this mean that if I bought the Nikon D40 a substitute alternatively of the Canon or D40X, I would actually be taking decrease quality pictures than I would be on my digital camera that I require now? Or would the zoom just be better?
Repentant this question is kind of confusing..
LOL, boy bear the marketing people confused you!

There is NO way the counterpart quality will be lower than your P&S camera with a sensor that is over 15 times smaller than practically any DSLR.
